HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

-

-Özel Yazı/Special Article-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Bildiğiniz gibi bugün, 24 Şubat 2013, 85. Oscar Akademi Ödülleri’nin sahiplerini bulacağı gün. Nefesler tutulmuş, kazananlar heyecanla beklenirken, bugün doğum günü olan iki kişi hakkında yazmayı uygun gördüm.

with Mehmet Binay and Caner Alper!

As you know, today –February 24th 2013, is the day of the winners of 85th Oscar Academy Awards will be announced. Everyone’s breathless, waiting for the winners… But on the other hand, I want to write about the two people who had born today.
Emmanuelle Riva & Caner Alper

*party time!*
The first person is one of the directors of Zenne (with Mehmet Binay) –the film that I’ll not forget-, Caner Alper. I’ve met him by Zenne Dancer and then, became a huge fan. He impressed me just like his film.
…and I’d like to thank to him for letting me feel his sympathy, for raising awareness and the most important of all, for being a real friend. Thank you so much!
Best wishes and happy birthday! I wish you years of films and awards (now it’s time for Oscars ;)) *party time!*

Emmanuelle Riva (Amour)

Emmanuelle Riva, bugün 86 yaşına girdi. Oscar’da bol şans diliyoruz.
The other person is the Oscar-nominee for “Best Actress”: Emmanuelle Riva. I can say that I really want her to get Oscar with her amazing performance in “Amour”.
She turns 86 today. Good luck at the Oscars!

NASHORN IM GALOPP/RHINO FULL THROTTLE

-Interview-
       Nashorn im Galopp/Rhino Full Throttle
When I was at Berlinale, I had the chance to see the short films from the Generation section. In these selections of 16 films, there was this film, which impressed me with its creativity. …and that was the film which directed by Erik Schmitt, called “Nashorn im Galopp”, means “Rhino Full Throttle” in English.
We see Berlin in Bruno’s (Tino Mewes) perspective in the film and he leads us through our journey at the streets of this city. Then, Vicky (Marleen Lohse) comes out to the screen. Vicky, who fills his life with joy and makes this city look significant for him. But, is this really the happily-ever-after for them?
I just don’t want to spoil the whole film by giving “spoilers” (hmm, spoil it with spoilers would be really bad just like spoiling my entire line with these words… you’re lucky!) But, anyway, it’s one of the short films that I can freely recommend to people. I also liked the time concept in it.

-Short is good!
…and we’ve made a fantastic interview with the awesome guy behind the camera, Erik Schmitt!
Here it is:

Me with Erik Schmitt! :-) -this one was really ordinary...

1) First of all, I’m really glad that I had the opportunity to attend your film’s, Nashorn im Galopp, worldwide premiere at the section “Generation K14 Plus-Kurzfilme 2”. To know better, I’d like to ask: Who’s Erik Schmitt?

I‘ll let you know once i found out.

2) How did you come up with the idea of starting a film production “Kamerapferd” and collaborate with Stephan Müller?
We share a special passion for visual and playful ideas. When we started to work together, it felt quite symbiotic, so we just kept on filming... It‘s good to have a ping pong partner who makes sure you re not just copying yourself.
Erik Schmitt & Stephan Müller -as Kamerapferd!

3) As looking back to your another projects, we get to know your style. –I pretty much liked “Nun Sehen Sie Folgendes”- Is it your purpose to make films that reflect the idea of creating another world? Just like mixing surrealism with the reality.
I find a lot of inspiration in the world o surrealism. There is something deep, unconscious but still life determinating in all of us. I like it, when this part is triggered, by an image, by a secret, or anything else that can not be explained with words. But i also like to laugh. I think humour is an essential theme in this world.
...now that's better! *slam*

4) “Nashorn im Galopp” reminded me of REM’s song, “Überlin”. So, what exactly is it to get lost in Berlin? Or is it a conflict inside the one who’s lost?

Everyone feels lost somehow, sometimes, and we all try to find a way out of this feeling. The story of the Nashorn shows two different kinds of feeling lost.By accepting the fact that they are not only victims they realise they can actually change something.
I am here!

5) How was your reactions when you first heard that you were on the road to Berlinale?
Like this:

6) How’s “Erik Schmitt” while shooting the film? At the set? It’s quite obvious that “he’s” not the serious guy there. J
You should ask the others of the team... I really don t know. I think i can get serious, when under pressure. This shoot however, i enjoyed it so much, everyone involved was such a great person, so automatically i was quite relaxed... Having fun while shooting is important, because it keeps your work playful and creative.

Erik Schmitt at the set! (Nashy!)

7) Bruno’s the guy who searches for his lost “soul” in the spirit of Berlin. Then, his missing part is combined with the beauty of the film, Vicky who turns out to his soulmate. We also had seen a “searching for soulmate” stuff in “Café de Flore” but the consequences were different there. Is she really his soulmate or the conscience of him?
I think the story of finding a soulmate is as old as any story... The fun of the nashorn was find new images to this feeling. Whether she is soulmate or conscience is up to you, it depends if you feel that it is his story, or theirs...
(from left to right) Erik Schmitt (director), Marleen Lohse (Vicky) and Tino Mewes (Bruno)

8) Are you planning to make a long-feature film? If so, will you make it with this style?
Yes, and yes. But for 90 minutes, i guess that you need more information, more structure... So its a new challange.

9) As a real movie and book nerd, want to ask about your favorite film and book. Also, which songs make you feel “cool” and inspire?
I love the „Back to the Future“ trilogy, the films by Jean Pierre Jeunet and Michel Gondry, all books by Matt Ruff. Music: Lately i ve been listening a lot to Album Leaf, Nils Frahm and Ólafur Arnalds for inspiration.
with Tino Mewes and Marleen Lohse

Thanks for the interview! All the best to you, Miss Cat!

4)  “Nashorn im Galopp” bana REM’in bir şarkısını, Überlin, hatırlattı.

7) Bruno, “Berlin’in ruhunda” kendi ruhunu bulmak için keşfe çıkar.

“Back to the Future/Geleceğe Dönüş” serisini, Jean-Pierre Jeunet ve Michel Gondry filmlerini ve bütün Matt Ruff kitaplarını seviyorum.

Genelde komedyenlerin “stand-up”larının filmlerinden daha komik olduğunu düşünüyorum.

Neyse…

Açılışı abisi Can Yılmaz'a göndermede bulunarak yapıyor. "Adam Çin malı Cem Yılmaz gibi. Google'a 'Can Yılmaz' yazınca 'Did you mean Cem Yılmaz?'

“Abi, her şeyden azar azar, ortaya yap”, “Everything, but little little, right into the middle” gibi… İzleyenler sanırım şu an o sahneyi anımsayıp, istemeyerek de olsa gülümsüyorlardır. J

Pİ'NİN YAŞAMI/LIFE OF PI

                                           Pİ’NİN YAŞAMI

Yaklaşık iki aydır, sinemaya her gidişimde Life of Pi’ın fragmanını görüyordum. Bir fırtına, ardından geminin batışı, hayvanların kaçışı ve eşsiz görsellere eşlik eden Coldplay’in etkileyici şarkısı “Paradise.” Haliyle, fragman ilgimi çekmeye yetmişti. Bu yüzden öncelikle kitabını okumam gerektiğini düşündüm.
Pi'nin Yaşamı/Life of Pi

Kendi açımdan konuşursam, “Life of Pi” konusu açısından benim için çok değerli. –Sakın yanlış anlaşılmasın, bu filme ayrıcalık gösterdiğim anlamına gelmez- Bunun sebeplerinden biri de korkuların yenilmesi ve olumsuz koşullar karşısında gösterilen mücadele gücü. Bu yüzden konunun iyi anlaşılması açısından kitabın okunup, filmin izlenmesi ideal bir seçim olur. Zira, Yann Martel’in güçlü kalemi, kendinizi bir anda Richard Parker ile baş başa bulmanızı sağlarken, filmin görsel gücü, kalbinizin derinden çarpmasına neden oluyor.

Aslında Life of Pi’ın beni bu kadar etkileyeceği aklıma gelmezdi sanırım.
Pi, Richard Parker ile birlikte/Pi with Richard Parker

Pi'nin Yaşamı-Yazar Yann Martel'in bir eseri./Life of Pi-A novel written by Yann Martel

                                   LIFE OF PI

I had been seeing the trailer of “Life of Pi” for about two months. A storm, then the sinking of a ship, the escape of the animals and the splendid visuals with the song “Paradise” by Coldplay. So naturally, I was attracted by it. But I thought I had to read the book first.

Believe the unbelievable!/İnanılmaza inanın!

…and a Friday night, I sat on my seat to see the latest film of Ang Lee, Life of Pi.

The movie focuses on the life of Piscine Molitor Patel –a name which makes him get “humiliated” by other kids at school- His school life, thoughts about religion… etc. are told in the first section of both the book and film which have separated to three parts. In the book, the first part is narrated more detailed.

After that, “the ship accident” –which is the reason to the story to be told- occurs. A ship accident that “screws” Pi’s life up and makes him to leave everything behind. Which makes him go beyond the Pasific Ocean with a Bengal tiger called Richard Parker.
How Pi spends his life at sea?

(I just don’t want to give spoilers, so I’m just passing the third part. Don’t wanna be the ruiner)

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

                                                                                  -Goethe

By the world that Ang Lee creates –which Pi owns-, the audience can be able to concentrate on Pi’s journey. For me, the plot is significant –but that doesn’t mean that the film is “privileged” to me- Because it centers on defeating the fears and struggling against the negative circumstances. So, as for understanding it perfectly, it’s a good choice to to read the book, then watch it. Because, the style of Yann Martel makes you feel closer to Richard Parker and the visual power of the film causes your heart to beat hard.

Actually, I never thought Life of Pi would impress me that much. –But my expectations wasn’t low either- I’ve waited for a time to write this critic, who knows maybe I had been thinking that I was impressed?

But I should admit that I still feel the same. The thing which made me fall in love was that the Pi’s struggle in the universe which is infinite as his name, “pi”. Suraj Sharma acted splendid, he hadn’t even acted before though. I was terrified when I heard that Richard Parker was a result of high-technology. What? He seemed so real!

Besides these positive comments, I found some facts out that could be “improved”. To give an example, the scenes of Irrfan Khan and Rafe Spall prevents the film which should have come forward with its completeness. Author, who I guess is Yann Martell, Rafe Spall tells the adult-Pi “I’ve heard you have a story to make me believe in God” and that shows how film goes. I mean, incidents shouldn’t have happen this clearly, there must have been some pieces of puzzle left behind to the audience –to combine the entire film.-

Plus, I suggest you to watch it in 3D if it’s possible for you. Soundtrack by Mychael Danna is also stunning, helps you to get into it.

Life of Pi has nominated to 11 Oscar Academy Awards, including Best Motion Picture and Best Director –Ang Lee-.
