Oscars!

      

  Heyecanla, gecenin 3’ünden sabahın 7’sine kadar bekleyip, takip ettiğim Oscar töreninden detayları vermek istiyorum. Öncelikle bu sene 24 adaylık arasından 18’ini doğru tahmin ettim, geçen senekiyle aynı skorumu elde etmiş oldum böylelikle.

        I’d like to write about the ceremony, which I had been awake impatiently for it from 3 am to 7 am, Oscars! First of all, I’ve guessed 18 from 24, so I had the same result as I did last year.

         Kırmızı halıdan başlarsak… Benim en şık bulduklarımdan biri de Amanda Seyfried idi. (Alexander McQueen) Aynı zamanda Charlize Theron da göz kamaştırıyordu. (Christian Dior)  Jennifer Lawrence da gecenin yıldızı olduğunu kanıtlayan, iddialı bir elbise giymişti; fakat onu en şık olarak bulmadım maalesef. (Christian Dior)

        To start with the red carpet… Well, I think one of the well-dressed women was Amanda Seyfried. (Alexander McQueen) Charlize Theron was also glamourous in her. Jennifer Lawrence wore a dress which proved that she was the star of the night but unfortunately, it wasn’t “chic” enough for me. (Christian Dior)

Argo’yu aslında sevmeme rağmen, En İyi Film ödülünü alması gerektiğini düşünmüyordum. Çok etkileyici bir senaryoya sahip değildi ve adaylar arasında ondan daha güçlü adaylar vardı. Yine de Ben Affleck'in heyecanı görülmeye değerdi. Ne diyelim... Tebrikler!/Although I liked Argo, I don't think it was the absolute winner of this award. The script wasn't fascinating enough and there were better nominees at this section. But, Ben Affleck's excitement was worth-seeing. Congrats, anyway!

*En İyi Yönetmen/Best Director: Ang Lee (Life of Pi/Pi’nin Yaşamı)

Steven Spielberg’ün Lincoln ile bu ödülü alacağını tahmin ederken Ang Lee’nin alması büyük bir sürpriz oldu. Ne var ki, Life of Pi hayranı olarak Lee’nin aldığına sevindim diyebilirim./While making guesses of Spielberg to win the “Best Director” award, Ang Lee surprised us by getting this award. But as a Pi fan, the result made me glad.

*En İyi Erkek Oyuncu/Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln)

Hollywood’un saygı duyulan aktörlerinden biri olan Day-Lewis, 3. Oscar’ına Abraham Lincoln rolü ile kavuştu. Filmde gerçekten yaşadı ve hissettirdi…/One of the most praised actors of Hollywood, Day-Lewis has taken his 3rd Oscar by acting as Abraham Lincoln. He really had lived and made us feel him…

*En İyi Kadın Oyuncu/Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook/Umut Işığım)

Winter’s Bone ile ilk Oscar adaylığını alan Lawrence daha sonra karşımıza X-Men: First Class ve Hunger Games gibi filmlerle çıktı. Ardından, Silver Linings Playbook ile kariyerinde önemli bir role sahip oldu. Tiffany karakteriyle parladı ve Oscar’ı kazandı. Ne var ki, başından beri benim favorim Amour filmindeki performansıyla Emmanuelle Riva’ydı. 86 yaşındaki aktris bu rolüyle beni en derinden etkilemeyi başarmıştı./Lawrence, who had her first Oscar nomination for her performance in Winter’s Bone, came out with films as X-Men:First Class and Hunger Games. Later on, she had a significant role in Silver Linings Playbook and shined with it. Then, the Oscar’s gone to her! But, from the beginning of the festival season, my favorite performance was 86-year old Emmanuelle Riva’s in Amour. She fascinated me so deeply…

*En İyi Yardımcı Erkek Oyuncu/Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained/Zincirsiz)

    Ödülü aldığında sevinçten havalara uçtuğum isimlerden biri de Christoph Waltz oldu. Django Unchained’de “King Schultz” rolüyle izlediğimiz Waltz, filmin kilit rollerinden birini başarıyla canlandırmıştı./I’ve got extremely happy when Christoph Waltz got this award for his outstanding performance in Django Unchained as “King Schultz.” He had acted as a key role and done it well.

*En İyi Yardımcı Kadın Oyuncu/Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables/Sefiller)

        Les Mis’de Fantine rolüyle bu ödülü sonuna kadar hak ediyordu… ve aldı! Ben de onu Berlinale’de görme fırsatı yakaladığım için kendimi çok şanslı hissediyorum. :)/She really deserved that award with her performance in Les Mis as Fantine and she’s got it! I feel really lucky to see her at Berlinale. :)

Would a film which has nominated to 5 awards, including Best Film, lose the “Best Foreign Language Film”?

Argo’nun “iyi” olmasını sağlayan kolaylıkla yazılabilecek bir senaryoyu, başarılı bir filme dönüştürebilen kurgusuydu./The fact that made Argo a “good” film was its editing that turns a script which could be written easily into a successfull movie.

Pi’s Lullaby, Adele’in neşesi ve Skyfall… Hiç kuşkusuz, müzik kategorisinde en güçlü iki aday Life of Pi ile Skyfall idi ve bu kategoride ödüllerini aldılar./Pi’s Lullaby, the joy of Adele and Skyfall… With no doubt, the two best nominees in the music category were Life of Pi and Skyfall and they’ve got awarded at this category.

        Çok klasik bir senaryoydu ve Pixar’ın ilk kadın başrolüne sahip olan animasyon fikriyle ön plana çıktı. Akademi beğendi; ama bana göre bu kategorinin kazananı Wreck-it Ralph (Oyunbozan Ralph) idi./The plot was so classic and takes over with Pixar’s first woman to be the leading role. Academy likes it; but for me, the total winner of this category was “Wreck-it Ralph”.

Pİ'NİN YAŞAMI/LIFE OF PI

                                           Pİ’NİN YAŞAMI

Yaklaşık iki aydır, sinemaya her gidişimde Life of Pi’ın fragmanını görüyordum. Bir fırtına, ardından geminin batışı, hayvanların kaçışı ve eşsiz görsellere eşlik eden Coldplay’in etkileyici şarkısı “Paradise.” Haliyle, fragman ilgimi çekmeye yetmişti. Bu yüzden öncelikle kitabını okumam gerektiğini düşündüm.

Pi'nin Yaşamı/Life of Pi

 

…ve  bir cuma günü de Ang Lee’nin son yapıtı “Pi’nin Yaşamı” için koltuğuma oturdum.

Film, Piscine Molitor Patel’in –ki bu isim de onun alay konusu olmasına neden olacaktır- çocukluğundan gençliğine kadar olan süreci bize aktarıyor. Okul yaşantısı, din ile ilgili görüşleri… vb. üç bölümden oluşan kitabın ve filmin ilk parçası olarak sunuluyor. Kitapta bu ilk bölüm filmden daha detaylı anlatılıyor.

Ardından, filme konu olan o “gemi kazası” baş gösteriyor. Pi’ın yaşamının altüst olup, her şeyi ardında bırakmasına sebep olan o gemi kazası… Bir Bengal kaplanı olan Richard Parker ile okyanusları aşmasını sağlayan…

(Üçüncü bölümden ise “spoiler” vermek istemediğimden dolayı bahsetmek istemiyorum, sürprizi kaçmasın.)

Ang Lee’nin kurduğu -Pi’ya ait olan- dünya sayesinde izleyici Pi’yın yolculuğuna daha çok odaklanabilecek duruma geliyor. Kendi açımdan konuşursam, “Life of Pi” konusu açısından benim için çok değerli. –Sakın yanlış anlaşılmasın, bu filme ayrıcalık gösterdiğim anlamına gelmez- Bunun sebeplerinden biri de korkuların yenilmesi ve olumsuz koşullar karşısında gösterilen mücadele gücü. Bu yüzden konunun iyi anlaşılması açısından kitabın okunup, filmin izlenmesi ideal bir seçim olur. Zira, Yann Martel’in güçlü kalemi, kendinizi bir anda Richard Parker ile baş başa bulmanızı sağlarken, filmin görsel gücü, kalbinizin derinden çarpmasına neden oluyor.

Aslında Life of Pi’ın beni bu kadar etkileyeceği aklıma gelmezdi sanırım. Beklentim düşük gitmedim gerçi… Bu yazıyı da objektif yazabilmek için filmi izlememin üzerinden biraz sürenin geçmesini bekledim, belki de etkilendiğimi “sanıyorumdur”.

Yine de hala aynı duygular içerisinde olduğumu söylemeliyim. Pi’ın ismi “pi sayısı” gibi sonsuz genişlikteki, “büyülü” evrende yaşadığı yolculuk sırasındaki mücadelesi beni filme bağladı. Pi rolünde Suraj Sharma da ilk projesine rağmen gayet iyiydi bence. Richard Parker’ın da tamamen bilgisayar ürünü olması ayrı bir enteresan.

Film hakkında bu kadar olumlu yorumun yanında, birkaç geliştirilebilir diyeceğim noktaları tespit ettim. Örnek olarak, Irrfan Khan ile Rafe Spall’ın karşılıklı sahneleri, bütünlüğüyle ön plana çıkması gereken filmi biraz zedelemiş açıkçası. Yazarımız, Yann Martel olarak tahmin ettiğim, Rafe Spall’ın Pi’ya “Benim tanrıya inanmamı sağlamalısın” demesi bile hikayenin nereye gideceğinin belirleneceğini –tabir-i caizse- bağırıyor. Bu yüzden bence izleyiciye düşünme payı bırakılmalı.

Görsel dünyadan daha çok yararlanmak için filmi 3D izlemenizi öneririm. Müzikler de filmle oluşturulan kompozisyonu zenginleştirmiş.

Oscar Akademi Ödülleri’nde En İyi Film ve En İyi Yönetmen kategorileri dahil olmak üzere 11 dalda ödüle aday oldu.

                                   LIFE OF PI

I had been seeing the trailer of “Life of Pi” for about two months. A storm, then the sinking of a ship, the escape of the animals and the splendid visuals with the song “Paradise” by Coldplay. So naturally, I was attracted by it. But I thought I had to read the book first.

…and a Friday night, I sat on my seat to see the latest film of Ang Lee, Life of Pi.

The movie focuses on the life of Piscine Molitor Patel –a name which makes him get “humiliated” by other kids at school- His school life, thoughts about religion… etc. are told in the first section of both the book and film which have separated to three parts. In the book, the first part is narrated more detailed.

After that, “the ship accident” –which is the reason to the story to be told- occurs. A ship accident that “screws” Pi’s life up and makes him to leave everything behind. Which makes him go beyond the Pasific Ocean with a Bengal tiger called Richard Parker.

How Pi spends his life at sea?

 

(I just don’t want to give spoilers, so I’m just passing the third part. Don’t wanna be the ruiner)

By the world that Ang Lee creates –which Pi owns-, the audience can be able to concentrate on Pi’s journey. For me, the plot is significant –but that doesn’t mean that the film is “privileged” to me- Because it centers on defeating the fears and struggling against the negative circumstances. So, as for understanding it perfectly, it’s a good choice to to read the book, then watch it. Because, the style of Yann Martel makes you feel closer to Richard Parker and the visual power of the film causes your heart to beat hard.

 

Actually, I never thought Life of Pi would impress me that much. –But my expectations wasn’t low either- I’ve waited for a time to write this critic, who knows maybe I had been thinking that I was impressed?

But I should admit that I still feel the same. The thing which made me fall in love was that the Pi’s struggle in the universe which is infinite as his name, “pi”. Suraj Sharma acted splendid, he hadn’t even acted before though. I was terrified when I heard that Richard Parker was a result of high-technology. What? He seemed so real!

 

Besides these positive comments, I found some facts out that could be “improved”. To give an example, the scenes of Irrfan Khan and Rafe Spall prevents the film which should have come forward with its completeness. Author, who I guess is Yann Martell, Rafe Spall tells the adult-Pi “I’ve heard you have a story to make me believe in God” and that shows how film goes. I mean, incidents shouldn’t have happen this clearly, there must have been some pieces of puzzle left behind to the audience –to combine the entire film.-

Plus, I suggest you to watch it in 3D if it’s possible for you. Soundtrack by Mychael Danna is also stunning, helps you to get into it.

Life of Pi has nominated to 11 Oscar Academy Awards, including Best Motion Picture and Best Director –Ang Lee-.

Bir hafta öncesinden heyecana kapıldığım ve sayfalarca tahminlerini yaptığım Oscar Akademi Ödülleri’nin adayları sonunda açıklandı! Lincoln 12, Life of Pi 11 dalda aday olarak listenin başını aldılar. Silver Linings Playbook/Umut Işığım ise onları 8 dalla takip ediyor.

Elbette sürprizler de oldu. Kimileri sevindirdi, kimileri de şaşırttı… Amour’un 5 dalda adaylık alacağını çoğu kişi tahmin etmiyordu. Üstelik Kathyrn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), Ben Affleck (Argo) ve Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained/Zincirsiz) gibi isimlerin yerini Michael Haneke (Amour), Benh Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild/Düşler Diyarı) ve Ang Lee (Life of Pi/Pi’nin Yaşamı) aldı.

Cloud Atlas ve The Dark Knight Rises’ın sıfır adaylıkları hayranların canını sıkacağa benziyor. Skyfall ve Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ise teknik dallarda aday olmayı başardı.

The Oscar Academy Award nominees, which I’ve been extremely excited and making my prediction list for a week, has finally announced! Lincoln with 12, Life of Pi with 11 nominees got on the top. They’re followed by Silver Linings Playbook with 8 nominees.

There had been surprises, of course. Some of them were positive, but some were not… Amour wasn’t predicted to be nominated to 5 categories by many critic writers. Besides, directors such as Kathyrn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty), Ben Affleck (Argo) and Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained) has replaced by Michael Haneke (Beasts of the Southern Wild) and Ang Lee (Life of Pi).

Cloud Atlas and The Dark Knight Rises dissapointed their fans, but on the other hand Skyfall and Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey achieved to get nominated to the “technique” categories.
